The Transil Glossary

The silo industry uses a great deal of specialist jargon with various different terms. These might be familiar to some, but for others, we have added a glossary below. If you find more terms you would like to know the meaning of, the please contact us. We are happy to clear things up and add those terms to the glossary below.

ATEX standards – directives

The abbreviation ATEX comes from the French ATmosphere Explosible; these are the standards for explosion safety. Transil International calculates and manufactures in compliance with ATEX standards as soon as the explosion values (KSt value + maximum pressure) of the stored product are known. Once these are met, the bulk material can safely be stored in the silo, which will even be safe from possible explosions.

Level indicator socket

A level indicator socket is essentially a fixing sleeve mounted on the funnel, which can be used to attach read-out equipment to the funnel. This equipment lets one see from the outside whether the funnel is full or empty.

A cabinet positioned under the bin cover, which can be used to house measurement equipment like capacity/radar indicators.

Bin vibrator flange

A bin vibrator creates vibrations in the funnel to ensure better silo drainage. Vibrator flanges are used mainly for products that do not flow as easily, i.e. bulk materials that have a difficult time leave the silo/funnel. Transil International uses proven standard solutions for attaching bin vibrators to funnel flanges.

Flange filters

Depending on the type of product, one may find dust in the silo. This dust can be vacuumed out using filtration installations. These installations are attached to the cellular bin flooring by way of flanges on the floor.

Reinforcing rings

The strength of walls, bin covers, and funnels is calculated exactly to ensure their continued capacity and stability. These calculations are exceptionally efficient, as they include minimum reinforcement. Reinforcement (essentially a kind of frame) ensures that plates do not bend or rupture.
The silos use a double-walled system, with the reinforcement contained within the wall. The funnels are equipped with reinforcement rings around the funnel. Our funnels are frequently equipped with so-called ‘box profiles’. These are chamfered closed edge profiles.
